What is Open Source?

The phrase Open Source refers to an resource that may be freely used without copyright restrictions. However, it is always important to review any copyright notices that accompany a resource labeled as Open Source, as the author may impose some restrictions on its use. For example, a textbook labeled open source may ask for author attribution to accompany its use or may prohibit the commercial distribution of the resource.
